Use Requirements

Below are the basic requirements someone must have to operate a drone on University business. A drone use application may be submitted after the below are completed. 

  • a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA. Recurrent training must be taken every 2 years to keep the certificate valid.
  • Know and comply with the FAA Small UAS Rule (Part 107) and all applicable FAA regulations. Drone pilots are responsible for following FAA rules and regulations for drones at all times.
  • Drone Use and Purchases Comply with NDAA 2023 “Drone 安全 Act.” Certain drones may not be used on federal projects or purchased with federal funds beginning December 2025 at the latest. See “NOTICE – Certain Drone Manufacturers Prohibitedfor details.
  • Register the drone with the FAA. 检查 联邦航空总局网站 for instructions on how to register the drone.
  • Drone must be Remote ID compliant. Remote ID went into effect March 2024. 检查 FAA remote ID website for information.

This is a list of the basic information for an applications. Some applications may require additional documentation, approvals, or information.

  • Five Business Days. Applications should be submitted at least five business days before the requested flight start date.
  • Written permission from property owner(s). This may be given by letter, email, or text. In some cases a recorded voice message may be accepted.
  • Pilot Certificates. A copy of a Pilot’s Section 107 remote pilot certificate is required.
  • Recurrent Training Certificate. A Pilot must take the FAA recurrent training to keep the Pilot’s 107 certificate current. A copy of a current training certificate of completion is required if the Section 107 remote pilot certificate issuance date is 2 or more years passed.
  • Drone Information. This encompasses the drone make and model, FAA registration number, and remote ID number.

  • Written Permission to Record Persons. See “Idaho Law: Special Consent Requirements!” for details.
